Very pleased to welcome, the exceptionally talented writer, Grace Nossaman – the owner and creator of Life Chief Nation.
Here, she discusses the importance of goals and why you need them to accomplish what you want out of life.
There’s a lot of talk about goal setting, goal planning, and how you should be making your goals. However, why do you even need goals to begin with?
Goal Definition
There is a Tony Robbins quote that goes along the lines of, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”
In order to know why they can turn the invisible into the visible, we must first explore what goals are. Goals are results or an environment that you would like to happen. Goals typically focus on outcomes and results.
What would you like to happen, see, or experience? Whatever your answer was for that question would be a goal for you.
How Does Goal Setting Help You Find Success
So what’s the importance of goal setting? Well let’s take a look at if you didn’t create goals first.
Say you answered the above question by saying you would like to lose weight. That’s awesome! Unfortunately if you just sit there and say I want to ten you are not committing yourself to following through and will probably never actually see the results you’d like. In other words, losing weight is just a dream.
Now, say you created a goal to lose weight. This goal now gives you the desire, motivation, and push you need to actually take action. By simply creating a goal around your desired results, you are much more likely to act on it and achieve those results!
Consider each item on your to-do list. Each of these tasks are simply an action plan to a goal, whether known or not. Say your task is to clean the dishes. Then your goal is most likely to have a clean kitchen.
If you can clearly define the goal you would like, then you are more likely to perform those tasks. This is the why behind your goals. If you know what those tasks are working towards, that why can compel you to complete the tasks, even if they are undesirable.
Take exercising for example. Not everyone enjoys exercising, but you would be much more likely to exercise if you had a reason to: feeling healthier, having more energy, losing weight. Clearly defining this goal is vital to encouraging you to go to the gym. Without knowing that reason, you may ask yourself why you would go, have no reason, and then not go.
In the end, without a goal or reason, a desired outcome is just a wish or dream.
What is a Good Goal?
Once that desired outcome is identified, a goal needs to be created to give you the push you need to achieve that result.
Unfortunately, not all goals are created equal. In order to get the best effects from creating goals, you should be using the SMART system.
SMART is an acronym which stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.
When you create goals, consider this acronym and write your goals down.
For example, if your goal is to lose weight, a bad example of a goal might be: I want to lose weight. Instead, using the smart system, a good goal would look like: I will lose 10 pounds in 2 months by January 1st. Not only does this goal say exactly what you are working towards but also allows you to create an action plan and encourages you to start.
These types of goals allow you to then create sub tasks, such as cleaning the dishes for a clean sink. After these tasks are identified, it gives you a clear set of actions you can do to achieve your goals.
Many times people don’t start their goals because they don’t know how or are waiting for perfect timing. However, the SMART system deters procrastination since it is so clear on what you need to accomplish and by when.
